Vari-L Wins Patent For VCO Development Process

Denver-based Vari-L Company Inc. received its 11th US Patent. The new patent, titled Multiple Single-Layer Monolithic Passive Integrated Circuits And Method, covers a new process for developing voltage-controlled oscillators.

The technology underlying the patent improves the process by which Vari-L is able to manufacture voltage VCOs for subscriber applications such as wireless phones and pagers. The technology lowers material costs and shortens assembly time by integrating multiple components into a single unit during production.

The patented technology will also allow Vari-L's subscriber VCOs to achieve tighter tolerances and operating frequencies in the range of 3 to 6 GHz. In addition to VCOs, the method described by the patent can be applied to the assembly of amplifiers, filters, oscillators, and similar components.
