TIA Publishes New Cellular Standard

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has published a new standard for spread spectrum base stations. The new standard, titled TIA/EIA-97-B, provides recommended minimum performance standards for base stations supporting dual-mode spread spectrum cellular mobile stations.

This standard document ensures that a mobile station can obtain service in any cellular system that meets the compatibility requirements of TIA/EIA/IS-95, the mobile base station compatibility standard for dual-mode wideband spread spectrum cellular systems. Under TIA/EIA-97-B, compatibility is understood to mean that any mobile station is able to place and receive calls in any cellular system. Conversely, all cellular systems are able to place and receive calls with any mobile station.

TIA/EIA-97-B concentrates specifically on the base station radio transmitting and receiving equipment. It covers the operation of the base station and the mobile switching center only to the extent that compatibility with IS-95 is ensured.

The new standard was created by TIA's TR-45.5 Subcommittee on wideband spread spectrum digital technology. To obtain copies of the document, contact Global Engineering Documents at 800-854-7179.
