RF Components For Radar: Duplexing

Knowles - circulator hybrid coupler

The utilization of RF components in radar systems involves complex signal processing and transmission, with duplexing playing a pivotal role. In this article, which is the second part of our RF Components for Radar series, we will be focusing on the fundamental aspect of duplexing. In our previous discussion, we highlighted the various operational units within radar, from filtering to waveform generation. However, in this article, we will narrow our focus to duplexing, a critical function that ensures seamless signal transmission and reception. Contemporary radar systems employ two primary methodologies to achieve duplexing: one involves a circulator and hybrid coupler, while the other uses a single pole double throw switch (SPDT).

Both methods are essential in transmitting and receiving signals with precision, ensuring the system's integrity and performance, particularly in high-power radar setups. Join us as we delve deeper into these methodologies, exploring their nuances and implications in modern radar design.
