Lucent Technologiesrs of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Internet-enabled wireless handsets can deliver their products to market approximately one year faster using a high performance reference design platform introduced today by Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Microelectronics Group.

Lucent's flexible, multi-band platform can support GPRS up to Class 8 technology, which enables data download at a speed equivalent to a V.90 modem, 56 kilobits per second (kbps). The platform is expected to initially allow downloads of Internet data at nearly six times faster than today's fastest handsets. GPRS runs on packet-based technology that operates, with a simple software upgrade, on existing Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication networks. Emerging GPRS applications include web-browsing, e-banking, video games and virtual schooling.

Lucent's platform is based on digital signal processor (DSP)-based technology and a full complement of associated software. The platform's GPRS protocol stack and related software have been developed by Germany-based Optimay GmbH, a Lucent subsidiary.

The platform enables development of at least two different types of phones for different market segments. These can include entry-level handsets featuring basic Phase 2 dual-band voice service; full-featured, mid-range handsets for the consumer market incorporating capabilities such as voice dialing; and high-end, application-rich handsets supporting GPRS up to Class 8.

Standard features of the platform include: -GSM Phase 2 and selected Phase 2+ capabilities -3.6-volt power amplifiers -duplexer-free design

Optional features include: -GPRS protocol stack -tricoder-capable DSP software layer -man machine interface software -voice dialing -Tegic T9 predictive text input -SIM Toolkit -Wireless Application Protocol browser

Based on Lucent's Sceptre 3 system-on-a-chip technology that uses Lucent's DSP16000 architecture, the platform integrates microcontroller, mixed signal, and a host of other technologies onto the DSP chip. The platform uses a highly integrated baseband with Lucent's proven W3020 GSM radio-frequency chip and several new chip developments to reduce overall component count. The platform also includes FTA development of the module, including baseband, radio, power management, and user interface.
