Maxell, SCS Team to Produce Contactless RFID Cards

Maxell has announced that it will begin manufacturing SCS Corp.'s patented i2 System RFID label technology in an ultra-thin contactless card format. Each 0.25 mm thick RFID card will provide users with a complete read/write database capable of storing 1,024 b of information.

Introduced in June 1997, the i2 System passive, read/write RFID product can accurately scan multiple items without unpacking and sorting them. The i2 System includes an InstaScan scanner and Dura-labels small rugged tags that are made from a flexible laminate material. The label's onboard database is accessible through the two-way i2 communications protocol.

The new contactless cards will target ticketing, debit card, and parcel distribution applications. The cards will also be marketed to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and systems integrators for use in logistics, pharmaceutical, and library applications.
