LG Infocomm Continues to Penetrate CDMA Handset Market With Two New Cellular Phones

NEW ORLEANS (Feb. 8) BUSINESS WIRE- Feb. 8, 1999--LG Information & Communication Ltd. (LGIC), will unveil two additions to its popular 300W dual-mode cellular handset line: the LGC-320W and the LGC-330W for the North American market at the CTIA Wireless'99 show in New Orleans this week.

The small but powerful handsets offer features such as vibration-alert, a large LCD (4 lines and 1 icon line), Enhanced Variable Rate Codec (EVRC), IS-99/707 CDMA data (asynch and packet), and IS-683A Over-the-Air Activation. The phones also support the full complement of advanced digital network features including Caller ID, Short Messaging Service, and Voice Mail Notification. Pre-launch testing indicates that the units will provide the same superb network interoperability and audio quality characteristics that helped earn their predecessor its leadership position in the marketplace.

LG, which was the first company to commercialize CDMA technology anywhere in the world, has been able to achieve efficiencies that enable it to provide a superior product at very competitive pricing. LG has been quietly but steadily building a significant presence in the North American Wireless cellular marketplace with its LGC-300W dual-mode cellular phone.

Stated I.B. Kim, president and chief executive officer of LG Infocomm, "LG's marketing strategy is focused on providing a unique value proposition to its customers-- strong form factor characteristics, outstanding performance and reliability coupled with aggressive pricing at wholesale. LG understands that our customers- the CDMA carriers and retailers-- are the most critical part of any success we may achieve in this market. We strive to provide them with products and programs that support their business model and contribute to their success with their customers."

GTE Wireless, Cellular One, Ameritech, Alltel and other leading CDMA cellular carriers currently carry LG's current LGC-300W line of cellular phones. LG plans to transition its customer base from that series to the LGC-320W and LGC-330W during late first quarter and second quarter of this year.

LG Infocomm Inc., with headquarters in San Diego, is an operating business unit of LG Information & Communications Ltd., of Seoul, Korea. In addition to CDMA handsets and infrastructure products, the company manufactures and markets Private Branch Exchange and Digital Key System equipment, digital service units, modems, and other state-of-the-art digital telecommunications equipment. LGII operates a manufacturing facility in Mexicali, Baja California, where it intends to focus the bulk of its CDMA handset production for the Western Hemisphere.

Additionally, significant R&D resources are being committed to the San Diego headquarters location to develop wireless products specifically for the North and South American markets. The company employs over 6000 individuals and operates R&D, manufacturing, and sales/marketing facilities worldwide.
