DDI, IDO Select Motorola To Deploy 3G CDMA System

Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG) has been selected by Japanese cellular service providers DDI and IDO to deploy a trial version third generation (3G) CDMA (cdma2000) wireless system.

According to DDI and IDO, the trial wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) system will operate in Japan's Kanto region. This system will work under an experimental 2 GHz frequency band, which is part of the proposed IMT-2000 frequency band reserved for worldwide wireless use. Construction is set to begin immediately.

The goal of the system trial is to evaluate, research, and develop the cdma2000 wireless transmission method. This transmission method offers follow-on compatibility with cdmaOne, which is currently being employed by DDI and IDO.

Motorola CIG is a primary contractor to DDI and IDO for this research and development initiative. As a systems integrator, Motorola CIG is working with NEC's NEAX 61 Sigma platform for portions of the experimental system.
