Colubris Networks Integrates WLAN Security Into Its Multiservice WLAN System

Waltham, MA -- Colubris Networks announced RF management and security features for its intelligent multiservice system. The InCharge RF Manager is an option for the Colubris Intelligent MultiService System. The solution provides customers with a single integrated infrastructure with network access and RF security capabilities.

Until now, customers were faced with a trade-off between investing in specialized WLAN security systems deployed as a separate overlay infrastructure, or settling for WLAN switch systems with integrated, but limited, first-generation security capabilities. Overlay solutions incur significant additional equipment cost and management complexity while switch systems suffer from weak threat detection and prevention, and limited scalability. The Colubris Intelligent MultiService System eliminates this compromise, providing a scalable infrastructure that is secure.

"McGill University has three years of experience operating an extensive WLAN service for 30,000 students, faculty and staff and we've built the best available security, based on Colubris products, into the network from the beginning," said Mr. Gary Bernstein, Director Network and Communications Services, McGill University. "Our users have come to rely on this network for their daily work. We are excited to see Colubris adding strong RF-layer protection and security capabilities to mitigate threats arising from rogue access points."

Developed jointly with AirTight Networks, the InCharge RF Manager uses AirTight's technology to provide threat detection and prevention, automatic classification without false positives, visualization of real-time RF coverage patterns, and the most accurate client and access point (AP) location tracking available. Real-time threat prevention automatically blocks more than 20 simultaneous threats across multiple channels and frequency bands per RF sensor, without disrupting normal WLAN traffic.

"By working closely together with AirTight Networks, Colubris is demonstrating it is committed to providing customers with a best-of-breed WLAN security, intrusion detection and threat prevention system," noted Joel Conover, Principal Analyst at Current Analysis. "An increasing number of enterprise environments fall under regulations that demand strict wireless assessment, protection and auditing, all features which Colubris can deliver via its partnership with AirTight Networks."

The newly introduced WLAN security solution leverages the Colubris TriPlane architecture. Introduced in June, the TriPlane architecture uses distributed intelligence to create more scalable networks than WLAN switch-based networks. By embedding security and RF management functions into the architecture, Colubris can deliver an integrated solution that scales to levels five or more times larger than competing products.

Complementing the InCharge RF Manager, Colubris is introducing the InCharge RF Planner, Windows-based application software that enables enterprises and service providers to deploy the right amount of WLAN AP and sensor network coverage the first time, eliminating costly iterative changes. Based on AirTight technology, the InCharge RF Planner models a WLAN network based on actual building materials and floor plans.

"AirTight is delighted to be partnering with Colubris and helping them to compete more effectively in the enterprise WLAN switch/controller market," said David C. King, Chairman and CEO of AirTight Networks. "Those enterprises that want integrated WLAN switch/controller and security solutions now have an industry-leading, best-of-breed combination from Colubris and AirTight."
