In a release this week, the Costa Mesa, CA-based CDMA Development Group (CDG) announced its updated forecast for CDMA subscriber growth. In its report, the CDG says that CDMA technology is continuing to grow and will soon reach 42 million subscribers around the world.

The CDG's new report says that there are almost 13 million CDMA subscribers in the US, which is up 187% from September 1998. In Latin America, there are approximately 3 million. According to the CDG, This total is up more than 960% from the year before.

Asia still continues to drive the CDMA market. According to CDG, there are now nearly 25 million subscribers in the Asian markets.

According to the CDG, continued strong growth in the CDMA sector is keeping the market on pace to hit or exceed its 50 million subscriber goal by the end of 1999. "We expect to exceed our 1999 goal of 50 million subscribers," says Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "Prime areas of growth in the next year will stem from the technology's ability to enable wireless Internet and information services today, while meeting tomorrow's requirements and providing the evolution path to the future."

The CDG is a non-profit trade organization formed to foster the development, implementation, and use of CDMA technology. To obtain more information on CDG's subscriber numbers, visit http://www.cdg.org.
