The MSM5500 Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset and system software, a high-capacity and high-speed wireless data solution that supports the industry-wide 1x Evolution (1xEV) standard, is capable of supporting peak rate transmission speeds of up to 2.4 megabits per second (Mbps) for wireless data communications. The solution, which also supports cdma2000 1x as well as offering backward compatibility with IS-95 CDMA systems, provides wireless device manufacturers an advanced, feature-rich solution available for high-speed wireless Internet services. It also provides wireless operators with an easy and low cost migration path to high-speed data capabilities.

The chipset and system software includes the full feature set of MSM5100 chipset, providing Bluetooth, gpsOne and SnapTrack position location capabilities, and multimedia features such as Qtunes MP3 player software and Compact Media Extension(CMX) MIDI-based multimedia software. In addition, the solution is designed to take full advantage of new Moving Pictures Expert Group-4(MPEG-4) video and other advanced features offered by the MSP1000 chipset and system software for fast development of tightly integrated smartphone, automotive and other Internet appliances. The solution also incorporates dual-receive chain diversity that enhances a device's data throughput.

The chipset will be offered in a 0.8mm ball pitch 208-pin Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array (FBGA) package with operating voltage of 2.5-3.0V. In this package, the receive diversity is multiplexed through the keypad and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) pins. This configuration is MSM5100 pin-compatible to enable rapid development. The diversity-receive functionality configuration will also be packaged in a 0.8mm ball pitch 320-pin Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array(FBGA) package, where the diversity pins are dedicated.

Samples of the chipset and system software are expected to be available during the second quarter of 2001, with production quantities expected during the third quarter of 2001.
