Measuring The Passive Intermodulation Performance Of RF Cable Assemblies

As an increasing volume of voice and data information must pass through a fixed bandwidth in wireless communication systems, passive intermodulation distortion has become one factor that limits system capacity. Just as in active devices, passive intermodulation (IM) occurs when signals at two or more frequencies mix together in a non-linear fashion to produce spurious signals.

Application Note: Intermodulation Distortion Measurements Of Ferrites

Intermodulation distortion (IMD) measurements are used to characterize the non-linearity of RF components, including ferrite circulators and isolators. Two CW tones (f1 and f2) are combined and fed into the Device Under Test (DUT). The resulting output is measured on a spectrum analyzer. The third order, and occasionally the fifth order, products are the critical unwanted frequency IMD products that are measured.
