Com21, Loma Scientific Jointly Develop Wireless Cable Technology
Com21 and Loma Scientific are working together on the development of a two-way data communications solution for the Multichannel Multipoint Distribution System (MMDS) market. Based on Com21's cable modem technology and Loma's wireless transceiver technology, the MMDS system will provide two-way wireless cable services and will offer 24 Mb/s data channels.
In the co-developed system, Com21 headend equipment is integrated with Loma's MMDS transmitter at the central broadcast site. At the remote site, Loma's two-way transverter is integrated with Com21's cable modem, providing a 10 Mb/s 10BaseT interface for an authorized wireless subscriber.
Initial field trials of the MMDS system will begin in July. Evaluation systems are expected to be available later this year.
