The Evolving Radio Base Station TX Signal Chain

RF Power Amplifiers (PAs) are rapidly evolving. While digitally pre-distorted silicon LDMOS amplifiers in two-way asymmetric Doherty configurations are mainstream today, three-way asymmetric and symmetric Doherty topologies are gaining design win momentum in 4G LTE radio base stations. Multi-way Doherty GaN amplifiers, with their superior power density and wider operating bandwidth characteristics, look to be the optimal next generation technology, particularly above 2.5 GHz or so.
