RDA Microelectronics Announces Volume Production Of Integrated GPRS/GPS SoC For Wearable Devices And Internet Of Things

Shanghai, China - (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - RDA Microelectronics, Inc. (Nasdaq:RDA) ("RDA" or the "Company"), a fabless semiconductor company that designs, develops and markets wireless systems-on-chip and radio-frequency (RF) semiconductors for cellular, connectivity and broadcast applications, today announced volume production of its high performance RDA8851GL, which integrates GPS technology with its latest GSM/GPRS single chip solution.

The RDA8851GL SoC expands the usage model of GPS applications by offering a small footprint, low power consumption and an expandable feature set, making it ideally suited for applications such as monitoring, remote control and positioning. With the entire hardware module the size of a postage stamp, it can be widely used in a variety of consumer electronic products, especially wearable devices and Internet of Things (IOT) applications.

"The 8851GL expands our addressable market within the consumer space and demonstrates our technology capabilities for creating highly integrated, high performance devices in a small form factor," said Shuran Wei,  CEO of RDA Microelectronics. "This product builds upon RDA's market leading success with its GSM/GPRS single chip solution for feature phones, which has shipped more than 200 million units. Integrating GPS positioning with a fully mature GPRS modem further strengthens the diversification of location service characteristics and enhances the scope of GPS positioning information for mobile data applications. With a flexible hardware interface and programmability that can support sensor hub-type computation, the RDA8851GL is highly suited for IOT and wearable device applications."

The RDA8851GL integrates advanced RF designs, a baseband signal processing engine, quad band RF transceiver, power management unit, bluetooth and GPS receiver on a single 55nm chip. The RDA8851GL is one of the first fully integrated chipset using CMOS technology, which reduces the bill of materials and simplifies the design process for system manufacturers for rapid adoption. It also incorporates extensive connectivity options for system scalability.
