Intermodulation distortion (IMD) plays an important role for many spectrum analyzer based measurements. Not only can a spectrum analyzer be used to measure IMD of a Device Under Test (DUT), but a spectrum analyzer may also contribute IMD through its non-linear properties. Since more than one component contribute to the IMD generated by a modern spectrum analyzer, this application gives an overview which elements contribute. This application note also gives recommendations for the ideal input level to minimize spectrum analyzer generated IMD.
