Coaxial Cables And Connectors: The Basics
By Richard H. Pouliot, RF Depot.com
Coaxial cables are a lot like a fuel tank without a fuel gauge. Not much appears wrong until something goes wrong. Also, escaping RF energy makes no noise, no sound and leaves no puddles. In the absence of easy reliable verification and replacement, or repair, a reliable cable becomes important to continued system performance.
In severe operating environments, vapor barriers and abrasion resistant outer jackets incorporated into standard cable construction are available from at least two manufacturers. Cable assemblies armored like a public telephone handset cord are also available from several manufacturers. This armor is usually applied after the cable is cut to length and immediately before the last shield termination.
