White Paper: Successful High-Precision QoS Measurement In Widely Deployed 10-Gbit/s Networks Based On General-Purpose Personal Computers

By Kenji Shimizu, Katsuhiro Sebayashi, and Mitsuru Maruyama, NTT Science and Core Technology Laboratory Group

In this article, we describe techniques for building 10-Gbit/s wire-rate precise network measurement systems that can measure the quality of service (QoS) of high-speed networks precisely and quickly, even with non-sampling measurements.

We describe our 10-Gbit/s PCI (peripheral component interconnect) network interface card for general-purpose personal computers and present experiment results that verify the effectiveness of our measurement systems.

The techniques for high precision and high resolution measurement using the network interface card are called "PRESTA 10G" and their effectiveness has been confirmed by demonstration experiments of high speed data streaming at SuperComputing (SC) 08, 09 and so on. The demonstration experiment will also be made at SC10 in November. This PRESTA 10G will be scheduled on sale from a NTT group company.
